Eddie George was driving through Bowling Green, Ky., when Urban Meyer messaged him about a job at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. A sign?

Bowling Green has hired Tennessee State coach Eddie George to fill its head coaching vacancy, the university announced Sunday. This will be George's first coaching opportunity at the FBS level after four years leading Tennessee State.

Bowling Green gave Urban Meyer his first head coaching opportunity in 2001, a decision that paid off tremendously well for both sides. Meyer guided the Falcons to a 17–6 record over two seasons, parlaying it to the job at Utah.

Eddie George was pondering the next steps in his burgeoning career as a college football coach while driving back from the NFL scouting combine. He got a sign in the most unlikely of places.

While spring camp for Bowling Green is imminent, George is set to make his debut as Falcons head coach a bit earlier than most programs; Bowling Green hosts FCS program Lafayette on Thursday, Aug. 28, before traveling nine days later to in-state foe Cincinnati.

It was practically spring time when Dell McGee left for Georgia State to take over for Shawn Elliott. George admitted the timing to leave Tennessee State for Bowling Green was not ideal, but the opportunity for the 1995 Heisman Trophy winner out of Ohio State was simply too good to pass up.

George becomes the third Black HBCU head coach to get an FBS job, joining Willie Jeffries in 1979 and Deion Sanders in 2023.
