It is a desert valley located in the northern Mojave Desert bordering the Great Basin Desert between California and Nevada in North America. It is among the hottest places on Earth reaching average temperatures of 46.7ºC in July. It was given its name during the California Gold Rush in 1849 when several prospectors died crossing it in their attempt to reach the gold fields.
