Kadena Air Force Base Photos 1963 to 1967 - Remembering Okinawa
I was stationed with the 1962nd Comm. Group at Kadena from 1963 to 1967. These are my personal photos of the base and some of the equipment I worked on. The equipment was either next to the runways, at the end of the runway on the center line, or about a mile out from the end of the runways, as you will see in some of the photos.
SR-71 Det 1 CIA Operations
The A12 Blackbirds, flown by CIA pilots were the first to operate out of Kadena AB, Okinawa in 1967. The unit was deployed from the 1129th SAS (Special Activities Squadron) out of Groom Lake "Area 51", Nevada. They were also known as "The Road Runners". The 1129th SAS was a joint USAF/CIA Operation. Chronology - Kadena Air Base
12 February 1982 - The Kadena Family Support Center opened at Kadena Air Base, serving as a prototype for the Air Force. 29 December 1982 - Two F-15 aircraft crashed into the ocean. One of the pilots was rescued; however, the body of Capt. Edwin W. Cardin, 67th Tactical Fighter Squadron, was never found.

Air Force Security Service activated the 6990th Security Squadron at Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, on 15 July 1967. The squadron reported to the 6922nd Security Wing for command supervision and administrative control, and USAFSS/DOR maintained operational control through the Pacific Security Region.
With the May 15, 1972 Reversion of Okinawa to Japan, Kadena Air Base was integrated with both Camp Sansone and the Army Dependent Housing bases and provided to US Forces Japan as the “new” Kadena Air Base. One well known incident is Kadena’s dangerous “Burning Wells.” Aviation fuel first surfaced in well water in (Kadena’s) Yara district May of 1967. Similar con-tamination was identified in other Kadena Town areas in June, 1968. Water drawn from the polluted wells reportedly caught fire when exposed to open flame.
